Bedroom Rug Placement: Three Layouts to Plan Around Your Bed

Black and white geometric flatwoven rug with fringed edges on a tiled floor

A bedroom rug should make sense from the moment you step out of bed. Before choosing a pattern, decide where you want the rug to be visible and where you want your feet to land. Then mark the proposed outline with removable tape and test the room’s normal walking routes.

Layout one: a larger rug beneath the bed

This arrangement places part of the rug under the bed and leaves fabric visible along the sides and foot. Start by measuring the bed frame, which may be wider than the mattress. Decide whether bedside tables will sit on the rug or remain beyond it, then measure the whole arrangement.

A useful planning example is a 160 cm-wide bed frame with 50 cm of visible rug on each side. That requires about 260 cm across the rug. Adjust the visible border to suit your room; this example is a calculation, not a fixed decorating rule.

Layout two: separate bedside rugs

Two narrow rugs can define the landing area on either side without covering most of the floor. This layout is worth considering when the bed is difficult to move or the room has limited space. Measure each side separately if furniture or doors make the layout uneven.

Check how the rugs behave on your flooring. Use a suitable underlay if needed, following the rug and underlay instructions, and keep edges away from door swings.

Layout three: a rug at the foot of the bed

A smaller rug can anchor a bench or create a distinct area beyond the bed. Mark the bench legs and the rug outline together so the furniture does not sit awkwardly on an edge. Make sure the arrangement leaves a clear path to wardrobes and drawers.

Choose the pattern after the footprint

Once the dimensions work, compare the rug with your bedding. A strong black-and-white pattern can sit beside plain bed linen, while a busier blanket may suit a quieter rug. Look at close-up images to understand the weave and check the material and care details on the specific listing.

What if a standard size does not fit?

Send the bed frame dimensions, a room sketch and your preferred placement before requesting a custom rug. Include any doors or cupboards close to the proposed edges.
